Recently Generative AI has been flooding all over the places and I have been hearing mixed opinions about the new technology that is being shoved into our mouths, and I have a passion in learning about new technology, I want to give my stance and my opinion on generative AI, I am in between disgusted and amazed by the uses of generative AI and I would to speak about it in hopes that people understand where I think Generative AI is best used for and what not.
The problem with Generative AI isn't only about the enshitification of the internet, Our main problem is about how WE USE Generative AI, We didn't come together to define the best or the worst cases of using Generative AI, Generative AI can be used as a good tool or destructive tool, Generative AI should be used as a tool, no more than that, Use Generative AI as your assistant, your companion, etc. It should never be used as replacement for Artists, Musicians, Workers and so on, Generative AI is not ready for any of this and we should never normalize this type of replacement because Artists, Musicians and Workers shows what we are as humans, I could go on and on to explain how many people uses Generative AI in a bad way.
And I want to focus on artists who have a huge issue with Generative AI content, They have the right to be angry about it, In fact I would be upset too if my hobby is taken over by the misuse of Generative AI, Spending so many hours pouring your heart and joy to your creation and sharing it online only for it to be taken for Machine Learning without a permission and no compensation is genuinely super frustrating, I wouldn't call these "AI art" arts, I call them "AI images" because it's an image created by Generative AI with the prompts of a person, Whether any style it uses, it is best to describe it as an image than simply 'art', But I also noticed that there's are few artists who keep complaining about how social media platforms are going to use your arts or your personal photos to train it to Generative AI, But when the deadline meets, they keep posting their art or their personal photo like if nothing happened, Take twitter/X for example, Twitter has announced that they are going to use everything that is uploaded on their platform to give it to Grok (their AI Chatbot), and many artists went mad over it and they started protesting and pressuring twitter/X to not use their uploaded data for Generative AI but twitter/X didn't listen and they just did anyways, some artists left twitter and are now posting on Bluesky and the rest are still posting on twitter/X like if nothing happened, That in my mind translate to "I am frustrated over something I don't really mind but I am joining the trend anyways", not only did that happen once but it happened twice especially with the AI button that appears in every image, if you really hate the platform using your art for Machine Learning, just notify your audience that you will move to another platform and that's it, it's best that you take action rather than complaining first.
Now, you are wondering why I keep repeating "Generative AI" over and over again? That's because most people don't know the difference between AI and Generative AI, Normal AI has existed for very long time and its the one that you see in NPCs games, Social Media Algorithms and Search Engines, Generative AI is behind the Chatbots, AI Agents and the clusterfuck that companies keeps making every single month, That's the difference between the two.
I believe that there's a good use case of Generative AI, it helps you be more efficient and saves time as long as you use it to help you and not use it to do the work for you, and I think it doesn't make sense that you would need to use Generative AI in your hobbies, if you are doing something that you are passionate about, Do it without the use of Generative AI unless if you are doing your job, you could use Gen AI to speed up the process, your company wouldn't care as long as the product is ready.
I have been using Generative AI to help me with my homework and also teaching me using only the sources that I give (NotebookLM), I also use it to help me with coding, sometimes I have problems with coding in JavaScript when I code my webpage so I ask AI to help me or fix my code to make sure my webpage functions like how it should be, What I did is that I use Generative AI to help me NOT do my work.
"But but you said it wouldn't make sense to use generative AI when you do your hobby" yes you are right but it wouldn't hurt to ask for help, you could use Generative AI to tell you what's wrong and offer you a solution that you do it yourself
in the end, Many of you may not agree with me on this, some of you don't like to use Generative AI at all which is understandable but my whole point is that Generative AI has a room to improve our workflow, it's just we are using it in the wrong way and companies want it this way to cut costs and generate more profit, but if we used Generative AI in the way It should be used then people will understand that Generative AI wasn't all bad after all, What do you think about this, I will be your waiting for your opinions and I hope I did make a point in this blog. ^^
It's indeed a double edge. In my opinion the whole AI-put-into-everything and it's negative consequences wouldn't have happened if these investors & portfolios never heard about it. I myself Ilam very fond of the POSITIVE things it's done and still does to this day, for example, a big consequence of the boom are those chatbot websites (not the slop ones because they suck BALLS) which I use to kill time. Though they were not funded by the huge portfolios & suits that hopped onto the train willy-nilly. Oh, sorry, I think I got sidetracked...my bad. The thing that I wanna say is that the people who kept enduring until the boom happened were all just hoping and BEGGING for investors, ANY, no matter how crooked and disconnected from the world they could have been. That's where it all went wrong. If only we had known sooner so the GOOD kond of investors would have swooped in. I know they are somewhere out there. They're REAL.
