Social Media is Internet's Dystopian World

Social Media used to be the utopia of the internet when it came out, Everyone used to share their moments, their laughs and random fun facts they know, they use it to communicate with friends as well, But it's 2024 and now Social Media became a Dystopian world, Where everyone thinks of a quick way to make an engagement by spreading misinformation that could lead to violence and horrible ideologies against some people or group of individuals, Social Media became so addicting that people started to make it their life and their personality for money and fame, I'm making this blog to show you how social media is your secret enemy and how to avoid it!

keep in mind that this blog is a stray opinion, it may not be accurate, if you have something to share, don't be afraid to comment!

The Utopia

Before Social Media, Internet was a newborn, Not everyone was adapted to it, and browsers weren't that relevant, you only had internet explorer or Netscape browser to surf some old web, these webs were made by people to make their own blog posts, share some cool info and basically do whatever they want to, There was forums and feeds back in 1990s, and in 2000s people got introduced to social media, one of the most popular old social website was Myspace, people can make friends there and make bulletin boards, make a blog posts and even customize their profile too! sadly myspace no longer exists but there's a fan project called Spacehey which is a revive project for Myspace, These websites were pretty limited as in coding, visual styles and design but they had a personality and joy that was spread around the internet, there you have Facebook, Twitter and Reddit, instead of posting a blog, you make a posts, it can be anything to share like, a photo of your friend, sharing your coolest memories with people on internet, there were possibilities you can do on social media, people used to also post memes to share laughs too, they only do this to keep the internet fresh and more enjoyable, Keep in mind that not everyone had access to internet and companies weren't too appealed to make their own website for people to access their offers and buy from them because again not everyone uses internet back in the day, years and years, Technology has advanced to the fact that social media became so good, The design has changed a lot, it's much simple for people who are new to the internet, Politics became popular on the internet and politicians took control over the internet and they started adding censorships which prevents you to access to some info on the internet from your country, Since 2020, people were trapped inside their homes because of a new virus that was spread rapidly around the globe, it scared so many people that they had to stay in their homes, watching tv and nothing else, but zoom calls and facetime became a thing, people started to meet each other online using video call services, Social media had a massive traffic in 2020, Tiktok was introduced and it made people so addicted to watch short videos, that they don't feel the time is running so fast, social media companies started to adapt Tiktok's algorithm and now people are like walking zombies, finding a good spot to film their dance and their skits to share it to the public, it's so scary.

The Dystopia

After the quarantine, People now started to refuse going outside and spend their countless hours watching short videos, share memes and make up anything to get a quick cash and fame, It's almost everyone's dream to become famous and be treated like celebrity, Meanwhile others also make short videos content as an ads and post it on short video platform for sales, this is called drop-shipping where an individual buys a product that is sold for cheap price on a Chinese website and sell it for more than what it actually costs, Usually you can feel that people on social media are like "bots" who repeats words, post anything without interaction with replies or comments and have a solid viewpoint that cannot change from a post to another, there are these people who sell their online personality for money, they let people control them and they can do anything to make a quick cash to satisfy their needs, let's not forget about those people who will disagree with almost anything they see, either good or bad, they will always complain about everything, small or big, How about cancel culture? This is the only thing that I hate in the world of internet, it was never the purpose of bringing justice on internet, it was all about the greed, they will always complain, threat and harm people that they disagree with, Here's an example, an individual gets accused of a bad action, people starts to attack that individual online by sending them death threats, mockery, and spam calling the company they work with or spam calling their relatives, But once the person speaks and defend themselves invaliding the claims that anonymous users made, internet will just say "sorry" and they will not fix the damage that has been done on their career and their life, This is called "guilty until proven innocent" and this is what most people on social media follow this rule. I wouldn't encourage this behavior, This is too violent and too far to being with, I believe that this behavior encourages people to go violent whenever something goes wrong, and they will always judge you on every move you do thus locking your freedom to do anything on social media.

Make Your Own World

it's no secret that Social Media became like an apple that rots over time, There's no space for you to unleash your creativity, your thoughts and your expressions, If you can't find a place to show what you have in mind then why don't you make your own personal world? Yes you can! trust me, it's going to be a lot more better, you will have your own world where you can freely express yourself, share what you got, Organize your space and all of this are censorship free! and you don't have to worry about anyone bossing you around because after all it's your space, No one can tell you what you should do and what you shouldn't, But there's a catch, It will require some time and experience from you to make your own personal space, But don't worry it won't take that much time to do! There are static websites that allows you to host your own website but honestly some of them looks "too modern" and "soulless" pretty much they are just a professional static web hosting services you can find, you don't need to be that professional to have these web3 designs that looks too simplified and not as interesting as old webpages used to, We are not focusing on a professional looking website (unless you want to), We just need a classic looking website that will make the progress of making it a lot easier for us to do! our solid option we have is Neocities, a free static web hosting service that is user-funded, No ads involved! Not only you can make your own personal space but you can basically do ANYTHING you like on your personal space, However you should not forget about the catch that I told you earlier, you need to learn coding- HEY HEY HEY DON'T GO AWAY, it won't take that much time from you, Believe me, the only coding language you need learn is HTML and CSS, those are the easiest coding languages you can learn, sure I know what you are thinking, isn't there something that can help me build my own webpage effortlessly? well maybe, you have Sadgrl.online but sadly it has been archived and won't receive any updates, they have guides on html and they even have a site builder too! I don't really know what else can I recommend to make this job easier for you, if you don't need that complexity of a planning, learning and coding, Maybe you can start making a blog page like me! you can basically talk and discuss about certain things on your head, just clearing up your mind, isn't that cool? It may be not very interesting for you but you have only 2 paths, Either open a blog page or start making your own webpage by learning step by step, I haven't opened a Neocities page because I didn't have enough time for it but soon I will learn and do my best to make a webpage where I can express myself from there! and you too should get started too! There are plenty of ways to learn HTML and CSS to learn from and they are mostly free, You don't have to worry about it, I will let your journey of searching and googling starts if you want to start opening your own page now, Don't force yourself to do it, just take some time first and start planning what will you do first before doing anything and don't go harsh on yourself if something went wrong on your way.

Conclusion

Social Media became soulless, aggressive and addicting part of the internet, There's no space for free thinking and express your thoughts, Everyone now forces the others to have the same mindset to go if they want to stay on the platform they are active in, it used to be nice and everyone was very welcoming, the users would use it to share memories and moments with their friends or for everyone, it became a dystopian world now, However, if you want to have your own space, Your own profile, Your own world where you can share, make and do everything you want, You can open a static webpage, start learning coding and make the page of your dreams, You can open a blog as an alternative option too, it will be very fun to do it and you will develop some skills to share it with others!

This is my opinion about social media, I hope I have made a valid and clear point that I was making in this blog, comment down your opinions about this blog, you can visit my guestbook to leave a feedback whenever you like, I am open for discussions if you would like!

Do some research - you're confusing between the internet and the web in your first paragraph, the internet is much older than the www (which was only opened to the public in 1991) we know today. The internet was created in the 1960's for scientists to share their research papers much easier, as it was becoming harder and harder to quote their colleagues in their own work, and there were other distributer systems available to the public such as Usenet (established 1980). The internet was never a utopia, maybe because you were browsing as a child it seemed so - but I remember the times when CP (both of real and fictional children) was distributed casually in chatrooms and the amount of homophobia and transphobia that was rampant in anime blogs. Literally the owner of OtakuWorld was a trans woman who was chased off the internet with death and rape threats, and that was the late 2000's, not 2020's. Also about MySpace - the aesthetic of the place was so good due to the bug that allowed to customize your profile, but the amount of "MySpace music artists" who ended up grooming children + saying racist shit and still had careers up until the 2020's (Jeffery Star is a great example of this, considering he launched a Nazi makeup brand on MySpace and had a song encouraging underage people to masturbate to his voice during that era). Also comparing people to zombies is done here in such bad taste, as it is scientifically shown that during harsh and depressive times (think of The Great Depression) are not going to think too critically about the things around them as they're already so depressed. Also you're mad at people for dancing? Some of us been uploading our anime dances to YouTube (which has been there since 2007), it's not new, you just hate having fun. Also I"m not sure if you interacted with people before 2020, but people always wanted to be famous - I remember being called insane at my job for saying I don't want to be famous, ever. It was 2012. I do agree with your point about cancel culture usually going too far, but again, it was happening long before 2020. I think you're looking at social media from a skewed perspective, and while I agree that nowadays social media is designed to keep you engaged as much as possible and steal your information - Facebook has been this way since 2009, as it had games that constantly demanded your attention (plus made you constantly engage with your friends), everyone would post everything about themselves and we now know how much sensitive information they actually stored. The thing is, a lot of old websites and blogs had IP trackers and people would get doxxed a lot, and because people who were engaged in the internet were (sorry I'm saying it like that, but the stereotype is kinda true) nerds who had no life and would go to weird extremes to harass people. We mostly don't know about these things because they were rarely reported, and now we have much better internet security and can call the police in such cases. Plus it's also about how people use social media, and I personally use social media that are for the user and not built to be addictive for that reason - Cara, SpaceHey, Tumblr. I use TikTok almost exclusively to promote what I create, and link people to these avenues, because twitter and instagram are ruining art. If we tell people there are other options, I'm pretty sure they'd be more than happy to stop spending so much time on social media that's designed to create FOMO.

All of this is very true. I believe the internet started to go downhill once several big tech companies started to heavily commercialize it (You know who). The most significant example being Google buying YouTube. This video explains it pretty well, not only for YouTube but the majority of other social media sites. Take care. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V0bGs-hhenI

I hate to admit it but most of this is true, the current state of the internet has honestly made me appreciate real life more lol.
